Pan Jiu Jitsu Championship Results

Congratulations to all of the Gracie Barra competitors and their fine efforts at the Pan Jiu Jitsu tournament.  As  a team, Gracie Barra took 2nd place in the Juvenile and Adult divisions and 1st place in the Master and Senior division.  We are so proud of our Chino students for their efforts.  Kent took 2nd place in his division and Kelly took 3rd in hers.  Keep up the great work everyone! Next up is the GB Season Opener on May 8th and the World tournament is in June...

Question from a student in regards to preparation for the Season Opener

Question: I’m taking the may 8th tourney very seriously, which means training much harder, which equals to much more aggressive rolling sessions on my part. I’ve been told if I calm down I’ll think clearer, which is great advice! However, calming down seems to make me weaker and more open to losing position, tapping, etc because I’m thinking more while the other guy is rolling all over me. Am I missing some sort of balance between the two? The more aggressive I get, the more results I seem to witness and I am not entering this tourney to lose again.

Any advice would be great

Answer: You already answered the question when you said some sort of balance between the two. My experience taught me that the best competitors are not the ones who train more aggressively. If you have an opportunity to come by at 9 am to see the Gracie Barra World Champions training in preparation for their competitions you will notes that they keep a consistent, steady and well balanced pace though out the entire session of sparring. You may want to compare a BJJ Tournament to the sport of running when looking to find answers about the right pace to keep on your sparring sessions in preparation to the competition. Comparing the 2: I believe BJJ would not be a sprint and it would not be marathon but something in between. Hope it helps! – Marcio.
